In satellite communication systems (SATCOM), the received signal may have an unpredictable signal power and variations over a wide dynamic range caused by multi-carrier frequencies and unwanted jamming signals. The proposed smart AGC loop is designed to track the input signals’ quick fluctuating amplitudes generated by frequency hopping spread spectrum, the gain of the AGC could be dynamically adjusted based on the incoming signal to reduce the required dynamic range of the ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter). Different AGC schemes have been developed and evaluated in the Phase I work, the designed AGC has the fast enough response time to maintain the output signal amplitude ranging even with fast frequency hopping rates.
